Maybe Say It

Some things are easier to write than to say.

Teleportation? Maybe not.

Daily writing prompt
What super power do you wish you had and why?

I was going to say teleportation, but never mind! I have this burning desire to travel the world, learn every language, experience different cultures, and get to know people from every part of the world. I want to breathe in the air, feel the grass on the mountains, swim in bodies of water, and eat local delicacies through all four seasons.

I want to know just how cold it can get in the winter, what it smells like in the fall, how colorful the surroundings are in the spring, or what people do in the summer outside the Philippines.

A Swiss flag flies on a hilltop overlooking green valleys and snow-capped mountains under a partly cloudy sky, with a bench and railing in the foreground.
I am thinking about Switzerland while writing.

There are just so many places to go, so many things to do, and so much food to eat. I thought, maybe if I could just teleport and bypass the flight expenses and travel time, then I could do it all. But then, I remember that I love the journey just as much as the destination. I always enjoy looking out the window during the bus ride. It’s nice to notice the subtle change in the environment with every mile. I’ve only been on a plane once, and I can never forget how beautiful it was up there.

Three empty wooden benches on a snow-covered train platform at night, with houses and icicles visible in the background.

So, I’d rather embrace the limitation than skip the meaningful process. Just think about the conversations you can have during the trip. Have you tried measuring the distance by the number of songs it takes to get somewhere? I think some of the most interesting stories can be found in the train station.

There is also something oddly memorable about bus stop food, or in your case, airport food. There is just as much to see on the road as there is at the vacation spot.

Being able to teleport may be cool at times when you think about it. But I think that working hard and waiting a little longer to reach your dream destinations makes it feel more special. I know that there are moments we’d wish things could just happen the moment we want them to. Instantaneous gratification can be very tempting, but it diminishes value. I think that’s true not just for teleportation but for every superpower there is. Isn’t that why we usually hypothesize having superpowers? Most of the time, it’s to get what we want right away. But I believe that there’s also joy in making things happen without superpowers.
